IREB® Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering

Relevance

The function of Requirements Engineering in the development process is to identify the requirements for a system, to document and check them, and to administer and manage them throughout the whole life-cycle.

Many other disciplines depend on the results of Requirements Engineering. If these results are erroneous, a common consequence can be cost overrun or missed deadlines of the respective projects or even project failure.

Training

IREB provides the outline, contents, and timeframe for achievement of training objectives as well as the topics for practical exercises through its syllabus. Format and implementation of the training is up to the training provider.

IREB recommends attendance of a training course in preparation for the certification examination. However, attendance of a training course is not a prerequisite for the examination.

Education at the foundation level addresses individuals who work with requirements. It consists of basic knowledge in the area of Requirements Engineering, i.e. surveying, analyzing, specifying, documenting, checking, and administering requirements.

Certification

The certification is awarded to those individuals who pass the exam with the exam questions provided by the IREB. With the certification holders get an independent record about the achieved level of their training in Requirements Engineering.

Beyond the fact that common education creates an excellent basis for an equal understanding of Requirements Engineering within a business and between business partners.

Currently, syllabus and certification are available for the foundation level and advanced level. Higher level certifications as e.g. expert level are being planned.

The IREB:

•   Defines the training levels of the Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering Program

•   Puts together and maintains the syllabus for the different training levels and maintains the internationally uniform exam questions

•   Authorizes certification bodies in different countries with the execution of the exams and the award of certifications

•   Establishes guidelines for the acknowledgement if training institutions

The »International Requirements Engineering Board« (IREB), which consists of worldwide acknowledged experts in the areas of industry, consulting, research, and training, has developed a syllabus for the area of Requirements Engineering and created the certification »Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering«, based on the syllabus.

Examination Regulations

The exam takes 75 minutes and consists of 45 multiple-choice questions. The questions are of differing difficulty and therefore assigned differing amounts of points. The exam is closed-book, i.e. no materials are allowed to be used. To pass the exam, you must achieve at least than 70% of the total score possible.

The exam can be taken subsequent to a training course. The exams are graded by Future Network Cert. The certification body notifies about the exam result in writing and mails the certificate to the examinee’s home address.

Syllabus

The foundation level covers generally valid requirements know-how for all kinds of systems (like classical information systems, embedded systems, safety critical systems,...). However, it is not goal to deal with specific requirements engineering for a particular domain.

The foundation level does not prescribe a specific process model. It mainly defines knowledge a business analyst of requirements engineer should have. It is not intended to favor any published process for requirements engineering or overall software development.

3 Levels

The certification model "Certified Professional for Requirements Engineering" (CPRE) consists of three levels.

•   Foundation Level

•   Advanced Level

•   Expert Level

Currently, the syllabus for the »Foundation Level« and »Advanced Level« are publicly available. The »Foundation Level« certificate attests that the certificate holder is familiar with the terminology of requirements engineering and management and that the certificate holder has the ability to apply the basic techniques and methodologies of requirements engineering.

The »Advanced Level« certificate attests that the certificate holder is able to choose the correct approach and the correct mix of techniques and methods for the given situation and to conduct requirements engineering.

The »Expert Level« certificate attest that the certificate holder is specialized in certain domain-specific and process-specific topics of requirements engineering. The certificate specifies the domains and processes.

The certification model consists of three subsequent levels. The exam for a particular certificate level complies with the contents of the syllabus for this certification level. Prerequisite for certification of a certain level is having obtained the certificate of the previous level.
